FAQs on Neck Pain:

What is a Pinched Nerve?

Neck pain is most commonly caused by a pinched nerve in the spinal area. Pinched nerves are a result of a repetitive movement or holding your body in a stationary position for too long.  This causes pain to radiate into the neck, shoulders, and back. Surprisingly, a pinched nerve in your neck can even cause pain in your elbow or hands. Symptoms of a pinched nerve, aside from the initial pain, include numbness or tingling, feelings of pins and needles or weakness of the area. We will likely suggest you limit any activities that will aggravate the situation.

What is a Strained Neck?

Neck strain occurs when fibers in the neck muscle or tendon overextend and tear, also referred to as a pulled muscle. Some of the most common causes of neck strain include poor posture, holding an awkward position for too long, or lifting something heavy. Poor posture can happen both during waking and sleeping hours since it occurs any time the neck is tilted or angled. Examples of this include when you're sitting at a computer too long or sleeping in an awkward position. Neck strain can also occur when looking up or down for an extended period of time. Additionally, if you try lifting something that is too heavy, your body will compensate by straining other muscles including your neck. Both neck and back strain can be caused by heavy lifting. If you need to lift a heavy item, it's important to do so with caution.

What is Whiplash?

The most common injury associated with neck pain is whiplash. Whiplash often occurs during an automobile accident, and is caused by the severe jerking of the head. This often happens when one vehicle strikes another. Whiplash causes damage to the ligaments, muscles, and tendons in the neck resulting in stiffness, numbness, pain and dizziness. Some other, more complicated neck injuries include herniated discs and fracture of the cervical spine. When the fracture in your neck becomes aggravated due to an injury, the pain can run from your neck down to your toes.

Can Ultrasound-Guided Needle Injections Alleviate Neck Pain?

After the main cause of neck pain can be identified, it may be treated with ultrasound-guided injections that can target and treat the underlying condition. There are a number of common pain disorders that can be managed effectively by injections of peripheral nerves. Ultrasounds offer some unique benefits since most of our nerves travel with arteries; these nerves can be evaluated and injected using landmarks and images.

Using high-resolution ultrasound, we can easily target the superficial branches of your facial nerve and its deep branches by recognizing the nearby muscle and bones. We use a Doppler imaging before intervention to avoid injury to surrounding vessels. Ultrasound-guided provides a safe effective solution in cases you who are not responsive to or cannot tolerate oral medications and are not appropriate candidates for surgery. Pain relief of ultrasound guided needle injections lasts from 3 weeks to 3 months, the maximum duration of pain relief has been 8 months after single injection.
